Animated Thrones: George R. R. Martin Teases Three New Game of Thrones Projects!

In the ever-expanding universe of Westeros, George R. R. Martin, the maestro behind Game of Thrones, has provided a tantalizing update on the next chapter of the iconic fantasy realm. While the eagerly awaited second season of House of the Dragon is on the horizon, Martin has revealed that he's not done exploring the rich tapestry of A Song of Ice & Fire. Brace yourselves for a trio of animated projects set to breathe new life into the Thrones legacy.

In a recent blog post penned as the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, Martin reflected on the past year and shared his excitement for the French-American series Blue Eye Samurai, praising its stellar action sequences and well-developed characters. However, it was his revelation about the animated endeavors in the world of Westeros that truly set hearts racing. "HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A Song of Ice & Fire," Martin declared. While the projects are yet to receive the green light, Martin expressed optimism about taking the next steps with a couple of them. This news comes after initial reports in 2021 hinted at the possibility of animated GoT series.

Taking a stroll down memory lane, Martin recounted the genesis of these animated projects, revealing that the development journey started with four ideas and some remarkable talents attached. Despite encountering setbacks that led to the shelving of two projects, Martin remains hopeful about resurrecting those stories, possibly in the form of graphic novels.

One particularly exciting revelation was the transformation of the House of Dragon prequel titled Nine Voyages. Originally conceived as a live-action series, budgetary constraints prompted a shift to an animated format. This adaptation promises to explore the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, unraveling tales from distant ports like Driftmark, Lys, the Basilisk Isles, Volantis, Qarth, and beyond.

In total, Martin disclosed the existence of three animated projects in various stages of development. While the uncertainty of Hollywood hangs in the air, Martin expressed his determination to make these animated ventures as captivating and visually stunning as Blue Eye Samurai. As he aptly puts it, "Nothing is certain in Hollywood. But if it does happen, with one or two or all three shows, I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as Blue Eye Samurai. We will for damn sure try." As we embark on this animated odyssey through Westeros, fans can only wait with bated breath, eager to witness the magic that Martin and HBO may unleash upon the Thrones legacy.
