Toei Animation's "Magic Candies" Earns Oscar Nomination for Best Animated Short Film

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially recognized Magic Candies (Amedama), a heartwarming short film by Toei Animation, Daisuke Nishio, and Takashi Washio, as one of this year's nominees for Best Animated Short Film. The announcement places the film among an elite group of contenders, including Beautiful Men, In the Shadow of the Cypress, Wander to Wonder, and Yuck!.

The 21-minute short, inspired by Baek Hee-na’s Korean picture book of the same name, made its world debut at the New York International Children's Film Festival in March 2024, screening alongside The Klutzy Witch: Fūka and the Dark Witch. Since its premiere, Magic Candies has enchanted audiences with its unique blend of whimsy and introspection.

The story centers on Dong-Dong, a young boy who feels isolated from his peers. Instead of buying new marbles, he picks up a bag of colorful candies, only to discover their magical ability to make objects and beings around him speak. Through these extraordinary conversations, Dong-Dong gains new insights into the world and himself, delivering a poignant message about connection and understanding.

The Oscars ceremony is set for March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the film will compete for the prestigious award. This marks another milestone for Toei Animation, following Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heronwinning Best Animated Feature last year.

With its imaginative narrative and heartfelt themes, Magic Candies has left a lasting impression, and its nomination is a testament to its universal appeal. Fans of animation and storytelling alike will eagerly await the results on Oscars night.
