Faye Toogood Unveils a Stunning Exploration of Heritage in “Assemblage 7: Lost and Found II”

Renowned British designer Faye Toogood has returned to New York with her fourth solo exhibition at Friedman Benda gallery, showcasing a thought-provoking collection titled Assemblage 7: Lost and Found II. This latest presentation delves into the themes of forgotten crafts and the reimagining of reclaimed materials, offering visitors a glimpse into Toogood’s poetic creative process.

The exhibition, set in Friedman Benda’s Chelsea gallery space, features meticulously crafted pieces made from English oak and Purbeck marble, both materials steeped in historical and cultural significance. These elements pay homage to Britain’s rich traditions of craftsmanship, with the gallery describing them as emblematic of the nation’s vernacular heritage.

First previewed in Los Angeles in 2022 and later at Chatsworth House in the UK, this marks the East Coast debut of the collection. Toogood’s unique approach to design involves shaping her ideas through three-dimensional clay models, a process she compares to an “archaeological dig,” uncovering hidden treasures within the raw material.

The collection includes a range of evocative works—benches, cabinets, and more—bearing names such as Plot, Cairn, and Hoard. Many were created between 2021 and 2023, with a newly added piece called Channel debuting this year. This marble bench, crafted from three precisely chiseled pieces, complements the existing works.

Visitors can admire the intricate details, such as the shellacked finish on the oak, a technique dating back to the 18th century, and the hand-carved surfaces of Purbeck marble sourced from a family-owned quarry in Dorset. These timeless pieces evoke a sense of the prehistoric while reflecting Toogood’s deep respect for heritage and materiality.

Assemblage 7: Lost and Found II runs at Friedman Benda in New York until March 15, offering an unmissable journey into Toogood’s captivating vision.
