Aptera Shines Again with New Solar-Powered EV Prototype

Aptera Motors is reaching for the sun once more with the unveiling of its latest solar-powered electric vehicle (EV). This "production-intent" prototype is the result of collaboration with renowned Italian automotive design house Pininfarina. The vehicle stays true to Aptera's signature concept: an ultra-efficient, three-wheeled EV equipped with integrated solar panels.

The partnership with Pininfarina brings not only aesthetic refinement but also access to cutting-edge resources, including a state-of-the-art wind tunnel in Turin, Italy. Aptera claims this will help the vehicle achieve a record-low drag coefficient, potentially redefining energy efficiency in the automotive world. While exact drag figures haven’t been disclosed, Aptera has previously touted a coefficient of 0.13 for earlier prototypes—far below the 0.23 of Tesla’s Model 3.

The vehicle features 700 watts of embedded solar cells, which can deliver up to 40 miles of range per day without needing to plug in. For longer trips, a full charge provides up to 400 miles of range. This unique setup means that many drivers could rely solely on solar energy for their daily commutes.

Aptera’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. The company initially folded in 2011 after failing to secure federal funding but relaunched in 2020 thanks to crowdfunding and other investments. Now, it faces the task of securing sufficient backing to bring this futuristic EV to market.

Aptera isn’t alone in exploring solar-powered mobility. Companies like Sono Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota are also experimenting with solar integration in vehicles. However, Aptera’s lightweight, three-wheeled design and bold vision for self-sufficient travel continue to make it a standout contender in the race to harness the power of the sun for transportation.
