Marvel Rivals: Superhero Showdown Expands to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

Marvel and NetEase Games' highly anticipated superhero team-based PVP shooter, Marvel Rivals, is set to make its debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Originally announced last March, the game is already in beta on PC. During the PlayStation State of Play livestream on Thursday, fans learned that a closed beta for the PlayStation platform is coming soon.

Marvel Rivals boasts an impressive roster of Marvel heroes and villains, with 18 characters confirmed so far:

  • Black Panther

  • Doctor Strange

  • Groot

  • Hulk

  • Iron Man

  • Loki

  • Luna Snow

  • Magik

  • Magneto

  • Mantis

  • Namor

  • Peni Parker

  • Rocket Raccoon

  • Scarlet Witch

  • Spider-Man

  • Storm

  • Star-Lord

  • The Punisher

The game's premise involves converging timelines and multiple Doctor Dooms, overseen by Galactus' daughter, Galacta. However, the real draw of Marvel Rivals is the opportunity to see these powerful characters team up and unleash their unique abilities in thrilling combat.

In an earlier interview with Polygon, game director Thaddeus Sasser, who has worked on franchises like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Ghost Recon, highlighted the excitement of integrating superpowers into a multiplayer setting. "Having magical superpowers in a multiplayer game is something that hasn’t really been done to death," he said. "It’s still kind of relatively fresh and new, and the way we’re doing it, and some of the tricks we’ve got up our sleeves should be pretty exciting for new players." Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play game that emphasizes strategic team-based combat. Players will form teams from a diverse lineup of characters, each with distinct abilities that can be combined to devastating effect. The game promises to offer a blend of high-octane action and strategic depth, allowing players to engage in battles that require both skill and coordination.

The expansion of Marvel Rivals to PS5 and Xbox Series X marks an exciting development for fans of the Marvel universe and multiplayer games alike. With its rich roster of characters, engaging premise, and the promise of fresh gameplay mechanics, Marvel Rivals is poised to become a major hit.

Stay tuned for more updates on the closed beta and get ready to assemble your team of Marvel heroes and villains for epic battles in the converging timelines of Marvel Rivals.
