WWE 2K23 Servers Shut Down Less Than Two Years After Launch
Today marks the official shutdown of WWE 2K23’s servers, ending all online features for the game. Released on March 14, 2023, the wrestling simulation title now joins the list of games whose online functionality is discontinued shortly after launch. As of January 6, 2025, players can no longer access features like online matches or Community Creations.
Although the game remains playable in offline modes for those who already own it, its Virtual Currency (VC) system and all downloadable content (DLC) were removed from digital storefronts back in November. This move has left some players disappointed, as it renders certain trophies and achievements, including the coveted Platinum Trophy on PS4 and PS5, permanently unattainable.
The server closure has reignited discussions among gamers about the lifespan of online sports games. Many are calling for mandatory adjustments to trophies and achievements when server-dependent features are discontinued, allowing players to still fully complete these games after online support ends.
Despite the premature shutdown, WWE 2K23 was well-received, earning an 8/10 from IGN for its polished gameplay and refinement over reinvention. However, with the online component of the game now defunct, players are left questioning the long-term value of investing in titles with such brief online support.
This follows a similar pattern from publisher 2K, which also shut down servers for NBA 2K23 in December 2024. Comparatively, EA Sports tends to keep its online services running longer, with games like FIFA and Madden maintaining functionality years after release.
For wrestling fans, WWE 2K24 remains the only current title with online capabilities, while anticipation builds for WWE 2K25, expected to launch in March 2025. However, some players may hesitate to fully commit, wary of how long the next installment’s online features will last.
