Xbox Commits to Disc-Based Games: Microsoft Gaming Boss Emphasizes Player Preferences

Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming boss, assures gamers that Xbox has no plans to fully abandon disc-based games despite the growing popularity of Game Pass. In an interview with Stephen Totilo's Game File, Spencer emphasizes Microsoft's commitment to meeting customer preferences, stating, "We ship games physically and digitally, and we're really just following what the customers are doing."

While acknowledging the increasing digital game purchases, Spencer notes that gaming consoles remain one of the last consumer electronic devices with a physical drive. He hints at potential challenges in including drives in future console models, possibly impacting decisions on disc compatibility.

Addressing the long-rumored Xbox Series X refresh, Spencer dispels notions of an all-digital transition, stating, "I will say our strategy does not hinge on people moving all-digital. And getting rid of physical, that's not a strategic thing for us."

Spencer's comments come in response to concerns arising from rumors about the discontinuation of physical disc production following Xbox layoffs. He clarifies that the layoffs were part of an alignment strategy across ZeniMax, Activision, and Xbox, focusing on teams responsible for physical retail, ensuring that the capability is retained.

As Xbox continues to navigate the evolving landscape of gaming preferences, Spencer assures gamers that physical media support remains a part of their strategy, providing flexibility for players who prefer disc-based games.
