Studio Khara Joins Sunrise for New Gundam Series Featuring Stunning Mecha Battles
A new addition to the Gundam universe has been unveiled, and its peculiar title, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, pronounced “g-quax,” is already sparking curiosity. This ambitious project is a co-production between renowned animation studios Sunrise and Studio Khara, the latter known for the acclaimed Rebuild of Evangelion films.
The story revolves around the titular mobile suit GQuuuuuuX, piloted by a character named Machu, who participates in "Clan Battles." Set against the backdrop of a classic Gundam-style space colony, the series seems to borrow elements from Witch from Mercury, featuring high school students piloting mobile suits in competitive battles.
What truly sets this series apart is its creative team. Kazuya Tsurumaki, celebrated for his work on FLCL and Diebuster, takes the director’s chair, promising high-energy, visually stunning mobile suit action. The mecha design is led by Ikuto Yamashita, famed for his iconic designs in Evangelion and Yukikaze. Yamashita’s longstanding ambition to contribute to Gundam’s mecha artistry finally becomes a reality.
Adding to the intrigue, Hideaki Anno, the visionary behind Evangelion, is co-writing the scripts, ensuring a unique narrative flavor. This collaboration could result in a fusion of bold storytelling and kinetic action rarely seen in the Gundam franchise.
While the title GQuuuuuuX might pose a challenge for international audiences, it fits comfortably within Japan's katakana structure. Bandai Namco is gearing up for the release with an impressive array of merchandise, including detailed model kits and a Metal Robot Damashii figure.
Set to debut early next year, this series is poised to captivate Gundam fans with its innovative direction and powerhouse creative team. Fans of mecha battles and dynamic storytelling should keep this one on their radar.
